Re: Map creation tutorial[modifier le code]

Hi.
Yes of course, the tutorials are still available at my sandbox-portal-page Utilisateur:Sting/Brouillon.
Several of them are still in a sandbox-state, even after all these years (I really don't have much time for WP), other link to the final versions in our cartographic workshop. Anyway, all of them should be updated because there are new software available (GRASS GIS is much too complicated for our use here) but theses tutorials will give you the base to create great and accurate maps. Note that they are all in French. Other contributors from WP-fr created new tutorials here and some were translated in English there.

I hope this helps you start in this really interresting domain.
It will probably seem to be very complicated at the beginning with a steep learning curve but don't be afraid, it isn't: if the tutorials seem complicated and very long it's because each step is shown, making them easy to follow, and if you can use another GIS software than GRASS, it will be even easier.

Good luck. Sting (m'écrire) 28 juin 2012 à 02:39 (CEST)[répondre]

Hello. Thanks for your message.
The SWBD are areas and "islands" which is easier to use when your area of interest is limited to one square degree. For larger areas it is not. Some software are now able to merge these areas but I don't know if they work fine as I didn't try this technique until now.
Depending on your world region of interest there are other solutions. If it's the USA and need to use the SRTM1 I think there isn't, but if the precision of the SRTM3 (which cover the whole world) is enough for your needs then you can use the excellent GSHHS in which each entity is differentiated. Unfortunately there will be a big drop in the precision of the lakes and rivers as they come from the WDBII with a precision of 400 m. May be in this case you can use the OSM data for those entities.
Take also a look at our very usefull resources page, all data we use are linked there.
Have fun with maps. Sting (m'écrire) 2 juillet 2012 à 15:08 (CEST)[répondre]
