Highsmith Archive, Library of Congress, Prints and Photographs Division.; Title, date and keywords based on information provided by the photographer.; The 140-room Colonial Revival hotel was built by Freelan Oscar Stanley (co-founder of the company that built the early "Stanley Steamer" automobiles) and opened on July 4, 1909, catering to the American upper class at the turn of the 20th Century. The hotel hosted the horror novelist Stephen King, serving as inspiration for the Overlook Hotel in his 1977 bestseller "The Shining."
