east ofArras during the closing days of Augustand the opening days of September theCanadians attacked the foes permanentdefenses which he had prepared two yearslief ore and tremendously strengthened andwhich he was defending in the desperateknowledge that if he could not hang on atthat point, the war inevitably would belost. But despite his best efforts, the Can-adians went dashing through series afterseries of fortified trenches, constituting there-constructed Hindenliurg line and thesupposedly impregiiable Queant-Drocourtswitch line. Again, scores of guns and tenthousand prisoners were taken. Another smashing victory was gained bythe Canadians on September 27th, whenthey broke across the Canal du Nord andcaptured Bourlon Wood. Here and in thefighting around Cambrai, which they cap-tured by an encircling movement on Octo-ber 8th, they added seven thousand to theirtoll of prisoners.
