That night they slept in tolerable comfort, but it wasmerely a trick of their tormentor to lull them into false security. Some of the boldest walkedvaliantly into the withdrawing-room, armed with swords and pistols, butcould discover nothing. They were afraid that night to go to sleep, andsat up, making fires in every room, and burning candles and lamps in greatabundance ; thinking that, as the fiends loved darkness, they would notdisturb a company surrounded with so much light.
