DescriptionKiva at Megalithic House - Far View Sites Complex - Mesa Verde National Park - 27 Aug. 2008 - Photo by Don Graham.jpg
Kiva (round sunken room of ceremonial importance) at Megalithic House. The earliest dwellings in Mesa Verde were these pit houses. When in use, the dwelling had a domed roof of branches and brush. When the Anasazi began building above-ground homes and cliff dwellings, they always included a kiva, or a covered pit which was a smaller version of these pit dwellings. The kivas were used for ceremonial meetings.
