DescriptionChenopodium album plant4 Jenene Kidston (12112021073).jpg
Introduced, warm-seaon, annual, erect herb to 2.5 m tall; stems are often striate and often tinged with purple or red.
Lower leaves are alternate, rhombic to ovate, grading into elliptic to linear up the stem, lamina to 10 cm long; silvery green, especially on the lower surface from a mealy bloom. Flowerheads are paniculate, the larger ones usually leafy. Flowers are bisexual or female. Perianth segments 5, fused in lower half. Probably a native of Europe, but native range now obscure. It is a weed of many crops in many countries, particularly in cool regions. It grows on many soil types but grows to its greatest size on fertile, heavy soils. Leaves have been used as a green vegetable and dried seeds ground to make flour. Plants are palatable to stock when young. Seeds may survive for 30-40 years in the soil.
