English: Ancient Libraries Exhibition (Colosseum, 2014). Bronze bust of an unknown man, doubtfully identified as the philosopher Democritus. The original was found in the Villa of the Papyri in Herculaneum, and is now in the Museo Archeologico in Naples (inv. nr. 5602). Concerning this sculpture, the Naples Museum says [1]: "The identification of the piece with Democritus, already advanced in the eighteenth century was revived with new vigor in recent times, such identification would agree well with the adherence of the villa owner and patron of the "gallery" of sculptures - Epicurean philosophy descended from the doctrine of Democritus. ... It should, however, be noted that over the years, scholars have seen in the bronze very different characters from Solon and Aristotle to Philopoemen.
