m\feet. So far as known, the Nashville alwaysnests on the ground. Its preference for theground as a nesting site is the more remark-able, since the bird rarely or never hunts there,but prefers to seek its insect food among thefoliage, often of the tallest elms and chestnutsand other giants of the forest. The Calaveras warbler (Icnni: i^ra ruhri-capilhi (lulturalis) is a form closely allied tothe Nashville, but contined chiefly to tlie Pacificcoast, extending eastward to eastern Oregonand northern Idaho. Fisher is quoted iiy Chapman as saying: The Calaveras warbkr is acharacteristic denizen of the chaparral and isfound on both slopes of the Sierra Nevadasabout as far south as Mount Whitney.
